    The R-Mode Oscillations in Relativistic Rotating Stars

    The axial mode oscillations are examined for relativistic rotating stars with uniform angular velocity. Using the slow rotation formalism and the Cowling approximation, we have derived the equations governing the r-mode oscillations up to the second order with respect to the rotation. In the lowest order, the allowed range of the frequencies is determined, but corresponding spatial function is arbitrary. The spatial function can be decomposed in non-barotropic region by a set of functions associated with the differential equation of the second-order corrections. The equation however becomes singular in barotropic region, and a single function can be selected to describe the spatial perturbation of the lowest order. The frame dragging effect among the relativistic effects may be significant, as it results in rather broad spectrum of the r-mode frequency unlike in the Newtonian first-order calculation.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, AAS LaTeX, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    8,2'-Cycloadenosine, C IoHi~NsO4.3H20, is a modified arabinosyladenosine nucleoside which has been cyclized at the C(8) and 0(2') atoms. THe trihydrate crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2~2~2~, with a = 8.680 (2), b = 5.991 (2), c = 27.203 (4) A, Z = 4. The structure was refined to R = 0.0672 for 1411 unique reflections, photographically recorded. The arabinofuranose ring has a flattened C(4')-endo-C(3')- exo pucker. The conformation about C(4')-C(5') is gauche-gauche, and that about the sugar-base bond is high anti. The crystal structure involves extensive base-base hydrogen bonding, N(1), N(6) and N(7) all being participants

    Concordance of interim and final estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness: a systematic review

    The World Health Organization's Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System meets twice a year to generate a recommendation for the composition of the seasonal influenza vaccine. Interim vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates provide a preliminary indication of influenza vaccine performance during the season and may be useful for decision making. We reviewed 17 pairs of studies reporting 33 pairs of interim and final estimates using the test-negative design to evaluate whether interim estimates can reliably predict final estimates. We examined features of the study design that may be correlated with interim estimates being substantially different from their final estimates and identified differences related to change in study period and concomitant changes in sample size, proportion vaccinated and proportion of cases. An absolute difference of no more than 10% between interim and final estimates was found for 18 of 33 reported pairs of estimates, including six of 12 pairs reporting VE against any influenza, six of 10 for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, four of seven for influenza A(H3N2) and two of four for influenza B. While we identified inconsistencies in the methods, the similarities between interim and final estimates support the utility of generating and disseminating preliminary estimates of VE while virus circulation is ongoing.VK Leung, BJ Cowling, S Feng, SG Sulliva

The new methods and heat tolerant germplasm will be transferred to canola breeders, which will accelerate the future commercial release of heat tolerant varieties. Our aim is to help Australian growers to maintain canola productivity as temperatures rise in response to climate change

    Bypassing Cowling's theorem in axisymmetric fluid dynamos

    We present a numerical study of the magnetic field generated by an axisymmetrically forced flow in a spherical domain. At small enough Reynolds number, Re, the flow is axisymmetric and generates an equatorial dipole above a critical magnetic Reynolds number Rmc . The magnetic field thus breaks axisymmetry, in agreement with Cowling's theorem. This structure of the magnetic field is however replaced by a dominant axial dipole when Re is larger and allows non axisymmetric fluctuations in the flow. We show here that even in the absence of such fluctuations, an axial dipole can also be generated, at low Re, through a secondary bifurcation, when Rm is increased above the dynamo threshold. The system therefore always find a way to bypass the constraint imposed by Cowling's theorem. We understand the dynamical behaviors that result from the interaction of equatorial and axial dipolar modes using simple model equations for their amplitudes derived from symmetry arguments.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
